“My grandpa went to Sierra Leone, and all he got was this lousy hand-carved, ivory salt cellar.” Probably 16 century, and probably traded for luxury goods from Portuguese traders. There is more history to this kind of stuff, but it’s too sensitive and possibly political on many levels to get into on the old IG. For now, pull a Jimmy Buffet and find your own lost shaker of salt.
