POOR MAJESTY - THE DEVIL INSIDE

Client: 5ohm

Role: Filmmaker

Year: 2019

With apologies to The Exorcist

One of the many things I love about working with Poor Majesty is his willing to experiment and try unchartered territory. We both felt we had something magical with our record Dreamer, and wanted to continue that alchemy into the video format, as well.

One of the tracks I wrote for the record was The Devil Inside, which was originally written as a pull between the polarity of good and evil. Poor took a more salacious route, and we filmed the video along his story line.

In the video he’s a Catholic priest, and we are definitely riffing on the horror classic The Excorcist throughout. What made this experience extra-special was that many young people had never seen the film – so, our video was their first exposure to cinematic classic.

We got a little bit of flack for the video–it is fairly controversial–but I believe because most of the audience is younger, they enjoyed the visuals and the ‘how-to’ element to some of the sequences. “How did you get her to levitate?” and “How did you do the fire effect out of her hands?” The first answer is greenscreen and chroma key. The second answer is MAGIC.

Satan in this is the wonderful Sené, who also sang on the record. She was a real treat to work with on the video. It was filmed in the large mansion belonging to my good friend Ryan Heater, right in the heart of Boulevard Park near downtown Sacramento.
